But is it jazz? That's a question that many ‘jazz’ releases might draw nowadays from the more trad-minded listener and, whether Wynton Marsalis would approve or not, boundary-pushing is generally the sign of a healthily progressive art form. However, there are moments on this debut solo release from Norwegian pianist Christian Wallumrød – notably those moments that make up the first seven and a half minutes of the disc – when you might extend the question and ask: but is it music? Opener ‘Fahrkunst’ is one long ominous hum (of piano sustain?) – certainly impressive in its oppressiveness, but perhaps a tad self-indulgent. It's followed by ‘Hoksang’, where Wallumrød picks out a minimal travelling melody and introduces intriguing dissonances. On ‘Second Fahrkunst’ there's more of that humming (‘natural resonance’) but also braces of actual notes. The alternation between fairly straightforward, obviously ‘made’ solo music and the more ambient experimental material (including overdubs and the use of other studio techniques) continues to the disc's finale in the form of the charming faux-boogie-woogie of ‘Lassome’.
