Since this is a collection of tracks recorded more than two decades ago, it is perhaps unsurprising that In The Corner Of The Eye lacks coherence. Although Doran, an Irish-born guitarist now based in Lucerne, has made his name primarily through band work, his 40-year career also features solo and duo work – and it is tracks from this side of his output that are collected here. On the whole, the duets work better than the solo pieces. That Doran is a virtuoso and varied player is not in doubt, but the tone, shimmering or distorted, and sometimes heavy use of delay, don't quite work for me. The collaborative material, meanwhile, is more promising, and includes duets with avant-garde saxophonist Marty Ehrlich, the most obviously composed material on the record; some more bop-indebted work with Ray Anderson; and two tunes with cellist Hank Roberts, a regular collaborator with fellow guitarist Bill Frisell.
