Displaying impressively voracious musical tastes, this debut album from vocalist Cindy Douglas explores everything from bebop to swing to world music. From album opener ‘A Little Quiet’, penned by John Handy with new lyrics appended by Douglas, to the concluding Arabic flavoured medley of ‘A Night in Tunisia’ and the darbuka-powered ‘Caravan’ – the latter featuring special guests Abdelkader Saadoun (percussion) and Ian East (saxophone and zurna) – the song arrangements are full of captivating detail. Douglas' influences range from Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans to Betty Carter and Anita O'Day, and there are overt nods to Evans in a lightly dancing ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and a fine interpretation of his ‘Waltz for Debbie’ (Gene Lees' über-cheesy lyrics don't improve with age). Featuring guest accordionist Pete Watson, the tango arrangement of ‘Love for Sale’ works brilliantly, while Nat Adderley's ‘Jive Samba’ and ‘I Should Have Told You Goodbye’ (Clifford Brown's ‘Daahoud’ with Judy Niemack's lyrics) are similar standouts.
