Before his death in 2012, Clare Fischer managed to pack plenty of musical adventure and achievement into his 83-year, many-storied life. The serial Grammy nominee and winner began his career in the 1950s as pianist/arranger for the vocal group The Hi-Lo’s, became a bossa and latin master in the 1960s, and then opened up a lucrative sideline in doing orchestral arrangements for pop stars (not least Prince); Herbie Hancock has regularly cited him as a key influence. You can hear echoes of many of those stages of his musical progress on this posthumous release put together by his son and regular collaborator Brent Fischer. The disc contains 14 previously unreleased recordings mixing originals and standards; Denise Donatelli and John Proulx add vocalese melody lines on the title track, while Peter Erskine and Mike Shapiro share drumming duties. It’s a low-key celebration, a sentimental treat for fans but probably not the place to start for the uninitiated curious.
