You can love the Great American Songbook. You can also love the rhythms of Latin America. And sometimes music – (being a wonderfully flexible and inclusive instrument of pleasure) will allow you to love both, simultaneously. By way of evidence, we have Clare Foster's latest release, Kumbhaka – a word approximating in meaning to ‘the space between each breath’ – a collection of (mostly) standards set to the rhythms found in Latin America, So there's a bolero ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, a rumba/salsa ‘I Only Have Eyes for You’, a bomba Just One of Those Things’ and a curulão ‘Who Will Buy?’ (yes, from Oliver!, so not quite the Great American Songbook), Foster herself and Shanti Jayasinha do a great job as arrangers, and the band – a core of key players including Jayasinha on trumpet, cello and more, John Crawford on Fender Rhodes, and Guillermo Hill on guitar, supplemented with a cast of talented guests – provide impassioned accompaniment.
