Clark Terry is one of jazz’s more underrated and under-documented front-rank trumpeters, so it was refreshing to see Mark ‘Banger Factory’ Kavuma choose this very album as his ‘Turning Point’ in Jazzwise issue 301; and it’s even better to hear it ‘in the flesh’, freshly reissued by Craft in the form of this stunning-sounding, all-analogue Kevin-Gray cut Original Jazz Classics vinyl LP.

Terry, abandoning his customary trumpet exclusively in favour of the more mellow-sounding flugel for the first time, demonstrates his compositonal chops on five originals: the energetic title track (which contains a splendid Monk solo), as well as on ‘Buck’s Business’, ‘One Foot In The Gutter’ and ‘Pea Eye’. Supported by the dependable rhythm section of the two Joneses and the estimable Mr Monk, it’s a spirited set, steering between the stately, atmospheric and mellow (‘Trust In Me’, ‘Very Near Blue’) and the tough ‘n’ crunchy (‘Pea-Eye’).

The album is of further interest because Monk’s sideman appearances are rare – in fact, In Orbit was his only such credit for Riverside; but he’s a crucial presence here. He contributes a composition (the excellent and typically Monk-ish ‘Let’s Cool One’) as well as his uniquely-voiced piano accompaniments. His jagged lines and elliptical harmonies add extra spice to what is already an outstanding session. An essential addition to your jazz collection.
