Born in Budapest and based in Copenhagen, vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Claudia Campagnol is one of Denmark's rising stars, chosen to perform at ‘Danish Club Night’ at Jazzahead! earlier this year. With the exception of Chaplin's ubiquitous, Tosca-inspired ‘Smile’, all of the songs on this impressive 10-track debut album were written, arranged, recorded and produced by Campagnol herself. A touching homage to the brilliance of Stevie Wonder and the all-pervading influence of his art, album opener and lead single ‘All Through You’ offers a helpful conspectus of Campagnol's multifaceted talents - beautifully arranged backing vocals, circuitous song structures that neatly eschew the formulaic, an unashamedly eclectic soundworld that embraces everything from the synth-powered 1980s fusion of the Chick Corea Elektric Band and the purely a cappella textures of The Real Group to the music of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. And it's Hancock and Shorter who provide the musical inspiration for one of the album's standouts, the ballad ‘Rainbow Dreams’, which Campagnol composed at the remarkably tender age of 12. Also featuring a paean to Latin fusion on the wordless ‘Z-Song’, guest artists Jimmy Haslip and Vinnie Colaiuta holding down a monstrous groove on ‘Conquer The World’, plus the unmistakable timbre of Gerard Presencer's flugelhorn on the atmospheric ‘For Her’, I'm Strong announces a powerful new presence on the international scene.
