There's a joy about Filippini that translates to the oldest traditions of jazz and especially what used to be called the modern mainstream. The masters like him, and Kenny Barron, George Cables, and even Herbie Hancock have all expressed their pleasure at his earlier work. This new album might also go down well with them, with its added very European New Melodic sensibility and the noble bass sound of Palle Danielsson, who was a revelation once more with the release of the Belonging band's Sleeper last year. Most of the fine material is Filippini's, and Ilmiliekki Quartet drummer Louhivuori shows he's an excellent modern mainstream trio player as well as a progressivist elsewhere, steering ‘God Only Knows’ superbly, Filippini's best improvisation of the album as well. A fulfilling release, with some lovely touches and varied pleasures, like the celesta on ‘Sonatina’, to recall for quite a while.
