Taking Norman Granz’s lead, the folks at EmArcy gathered up a posse of young LA-based musicians for, what some might suggest, are (over) extended jams – just four performances over two 12-inch LPs could be considered as pushing things. Still on a roll, it’s a given that Brownie is the centre of attention while the Max Roach led rhythm machine kicks up a quiet storm and so it’s to everyone’s credit that they don’t do anything that might damage their reputation. Quite the contrary, the seldom heard brooding tenor of Walter Benton together with Birdmen Herb Geller and the enigmatic Joe Maini all take the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, but the fact can’t be ignored that this is no more than just the kind of after-hours jams that took place in countless clubs and gin-joints. The original vinyl formats paired Johnny Coles’ ‘Coronado’ with ‘You Go To My Head’ while the second album had ‘Caravan’ backed with ‘Autumn In New York’. Here, all four tracks are squeezed onto a single disc together with a three-minute edited version of ‘Caravan’. Don’t worry your wallet with this unless you already possess all the Brown Roach Inc albums on EmArcy.
