It's to EmArcy Records eternal credit that they had the foresight to record the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet on a regular basis to where the group left a legacy enshrined in a 10CD box. The nine tracks that made up Study In Brown proved to be the last official album which featured Harold Land on tenor sax – soon to be replaced by Sonny Rollins. The remaining material which was sourced from the aforementioned Japanese-compiled box set surfaced much later as ‘More Study In Brown’ and covers a plethora of alternate takes and a fistful of previously unreleased masters which amounts to an essential acquisition. In recent times, I have commented at length (in these pages) on this group's EmArcy recordings and its importance in the scheme of things. My opinions, for what their worth, still stand.
