If the music didn't give the era away, the song titles would: ‘Earth Spirit’, ‘Astral Dreams’, ‘The Parameters Of Saturn’; ah, yes, it's the early 1970s and Miles is about to lead us toward the cosmic solstice that is jazz-rock. Stevens certainly caught the wave with this super session that features the only recording Laird and Cobham shared outside of Mahavishnu. It's also noteworthy for the early looks at Khan and Abercrombie in their tyro days, although Towner, fresh from Oregon and early Weather Report sessions, stays behind keys rather than frets. Not surprisingly, the session echoes the sounds of the time: ‘Earth Spirit’ kicks in like a Miles jam, ‘Nova ’72’ showcases those cascading long lines that Steve Marcus so enjoyed with Count's Rock Band and Larry Coryell. Stevens himself sings and soars with vim and vigour, obviously relishing the company. If 1972 is still what you dig, this unlikely but not unwelcome re-issue will rock your tie-died boat.
