To my knowledge this is the first time these two great artists recorded together. Fortunately, it proved to be a perfect match with Tommy Flanagan's then working trio adding to the success of this swing-into-bop encounter. Throughout the overall feeling is one of total enjoyment as Terry explores everything from Satchmo to Dizzy (‘Squeeze Me’). Meanwhile check out Hawkins contribution on the mid-paced opener ‘A Tune For The Tutor’. For once there's a purpose in the bonus tracks as opposed to ‘filling up space’. Culled from the Eddie Costa: Memorial Concert, Terry essays ‘The Simple Waltz’ an original he co-composed with Bob Brookmeyer plus ‘Things Ain't What They Used To Be’. Hawkins then steps up to the microphone where, tastefully supported by Sonny Clark, he presents a perfect rendition of ‘I'm Confessin’. Mission completed.
