Rare Noise continues to populate that shadowy plain where prog meets jazz. In this case Porcupine Tree's Colin Edwin joins with Naked Truth's Feliciati to conjure a moody selection of bass collaborations. Some references don't surprise, like the thrusting ‘Conspiracy’ that has a post-industrial Crimson edge. But these guys have been around long enough not to disappear up their own heritage. Although they are bass men, there are few moments of spine melting attack. Instead, by taking the tempos down and limiting their sound palette they've created a series of minimalist events that are aural equivalents of ECM covers. ‘Transparent’, for example, is just that: a limpid vehicle for a gorgeous Petter Molvaer break; indeed the trumpet man's contributions are telling throughout, especially on the appropriately monikered ‘Sparse’. Jackson, often Garbarek-toned, also contributes vividly, and is particularly spitting on the neurotic ‘i-Dea’. And we didn't use the word ‘ambient’ once, damn!
