It was kind of inevitable that these two macho heavyweights would eventually work together. Gustafsson is, of course, the Swedish action man of The Thing and countless scorching high-profile collaborations with artists ranging from Thurston Moore to Peter Brötzmann. Stetson is the American bass saxophonist who's developed a unique technique combining circular breathing and amplification to build deep, trance inducing loops. Here, Stetson largely eschews his usual gimmicks (except for a low, circular burble on the final track) and concentrates on pulling deep vibrations out of the brass, with the bass and baritone saxes combining to create a luxuriant, warm bed of sound. There's actually a lot less scalding skronk than one might expect from this meeting, with the two players instead exploring various extended techniques, from wet key slaps and moaning subvocalisations to raw overtones and wide, Ayler-ish vibrato. But, when the tension mounts, there's an effortless ferocity that sounds like two giant, mechanical stags clashing antlers amid flurries of sparks.
