The first side of this vinyl EP begins with the sound of a deep intake of breath. It’s a neat way of reminding the listener that all the sounds thereafter are produced by one man with a saxophone, captured in a single take using no overdubs or loops of any kind. Frankly, you need reminding. As demonstrated on his recent album, New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges, Montreal-based bass saxophonist Colin Stetson has developed a style that combines circular breathing techniques with the imaginative positioning of microphones to create hypnotic, repetitive compositions that are inspired as much by electronica as they are by minimalism. ‘Those Who Didn’t Run’ rolls out a subterranean bass-rumble before accruing raw, distorted flourishes, haunted vocals and the click and crunch of close-mic’d keyslaps. On the B-side, ‘The End of Your Suffering’ employs many of the same techniques, spinning into Moebius-strip cascades of notes before ending in a flickering, triple-time sprint. Impressive isn’t the word.
