It may be called Danse, but this is not dance music. Intimate, atmospheric, modestly demanding, it's quintessential ECM music – the label is known for many things but dancefloor-fillers isn't one of them. But though Swiss pianist Colin Vallon's sound falls well within the established ECM parameters, he's a unique composer and player, generating a musical intensity that's entirely his own. He has an allegiance to the music of Miles and Monk – naturally – but also draws inspiration from the likes of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Icelandic avant-pop singer Björk. While on the face of it the band operates in a fairly standard jazz-piano-trio kind of way, there's a lack of dependence on individual soloing and instead a greater focus on creating a special (and wholly positive) kind of ‘group-think’. The wonderful textural work contributed by regular collaborators Patrice Moret (double bass) and Julian Sartorius (drums) is all directed towards a common, highly dynamic musical goal, and as such on the likes of ‘Oort’, a minimal gesture expands to fill what feels like an infinity of space.
