What with the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club farewell tour and the from-the-vaults-footage that is World Circuit's new Lost and Found release, what with the back catalogue of albums by various members and the new recording by octogenarian diva Omara Portuondo, how many more ways can Buena Vista Social Club be milked? Loads, apparently. Here, in what feels a hastily assembled package – there are no liner notes to remind us of the great man's legacy – are five CDs cherrypicked from the latter half of the life of the great Compay Segundo (1907-2003), so nicknamed for his penchant for being second voice in his musical partnerships. A wiz on the guitar and threestring Cuban tres, Segundo also played clarinet and invented the seven-string armonico; these representative of his seminal work with Los Compadrés, one of the most successful Cuban duos of all time. Still, many of his big hits – songs such as ‘Hey Carumba’, ‘Saludo Compay’ and of course, ‘Chan Chan’ – are here, often more than once. Driving home the man's genius, which longtime fans are well aware of.
