Joe Henderson always approached latin rhythm from a sly and seductive Blue Note angle. In contrast, trombonist Conrad Herwig and his band of New York stalwarts up the latin ante with strong Afro-Cuban beats and flashy arrangements by leader Herwig and pianist Bill O'Connel. But what's lost in subtlety is made up for in power, panache and dynamic light and shade. ‘Recorda Me’ gains a strong Cuban pulse, Kenny Dorham's ‘Blue Bossa’ intricate harmonised brass and ‘Inner Urge’ a sensuous change in tempo. And for a live gig, the playing is skin tight and on the money. The four horns are supple and shift textures on each song, there are dramatic crescendos and sudden breaks, and densely harmonised sustains sitting precisely over a web of latin rhythm. With each track lasting about 10 minutes, soloists stretch out and have room to breathe. Cuber and Sipiagin are on the case, but Lovano is the standout, turning a terrific slow burning and blues-inflected solo on ‘Mamacita’. Always his own man, he is the one who comes closest to the subtlety of the Henderson aesthetic.
