With Fontanelle's new album Vitamin F currently making waves, it'd be nice to think the ring modulator is primed for a come back – but here's a slice of vinyl heaven where it never went out of fashion. On tracks like ‘Shadow On The Mountain’ you'll find deep Mwandishi-style funk-fusion grooves dripping in spaced-out electric piano, wah-wah guitar and extended modulator experiments. This is tough jazz-rock, with Bruce Cale's electric bass holding down virtuosic lines that bubble with a vigour and bluesy flair similar to Dave Holland circa Miles Davis at the Isle of Wight 1970. On bangers like ‘Interlock’ and ‘To Miles’, Cale switches to acoustic for preposterously hard-swinging free-bop that's both rugged and loose at the same time. Extra points, too, for possibly the gnarliest melodica solo ever committed to tape. This one hasn't just got hairs on its chest: it's got hairs on the hairs on its chest.
