Despite it's starry provenance – yes, Julian is Larry's son, Nick is Joe's offspring and Karma is Son of Brian – Coolidge Returns is a pleasantly low key, straight ahead trio recording with no attempt to replicate any of the dads’ sounds. True, the ‘live’ in the studio recording has echoes of Coryell senior's trio recordings with Chesky: but CAST are altogether tighter though no less blessed with spectacular chops.
Nor does CAST fit any power trio clichés: for once it's not all about that guitar hero. Instead Auger's drums are mixed to the fore and Sample happily twins lines with Coryell's articulate figures. Julian also keeps clear from multitudinous effects and the result is a refreshingly old school mix of tasty rockers (‘Walk Of The Dragon’), chordally slick groovers (‘Subada’) and blues stompers (‘Rice Krispy Socrates’). There's also a rich seam of funk, with the title track echoing Scofield's run outs with Medeski, Martin and Wood. Presumably repackaged for the recent European tour – that ‘hard’ second album has yet to appear though there's more contemporary material available, as ever, on line – Coolidge Returns is played with a smile on its face and a kick in its heels that will be appreciated whatever generation you're from.
