Although vocalist Dwight Trible is most probably the name that will be readily identified by most this is a west coast supergroup whose members have the kind of credits that cover a huge swathe of black music history: Dizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver, Ramsey Lewis, Minnie Riperton and Nicole Mitchell, to name but some. That wealth of experience is priceless, and any one of the 11 songs on offer thus carries the kind of gravitas that takes Cosmic Vibrations beyond the potential cliché of ‘deep jazz’ and into the realm of deep meditation. The absence of a kit drum; the extensive use of non-western and Native American percussion; the seamless blend of spoken word and melodic vocal and horn lines – all these elements cohere to make the music richly layered without being overly dense. Much like the Coltranes' oeuvre the work is predicated on the ideal of ‘oneness’ across all imaginable boundaries, and the call for greater respect for humankind and nature is not at all misplaced. A reprise of the perennial gospel anthem ‘Motherless Child’, rendered with a languid swing, is welcome at a time when new generations are seeing too many orphans in their midst.
