Cuong Vu has long been associated with ‘eout there’ directions in jazz, as he most recently demonstrated in 2016 with Pat Metheny on the sonically dense Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny (Nonesuch). But he has also been working towards a reconciliation of outside playing with inside playing; its been a delicate balancing act that has evolved through Ellington/Strayhorn tribute, Indigo Mist (2014), and Ballet: The Music of Mike Gibbs (recorded in 2016), the latter a direct precursor of Change In The Air which was recorded in May last year. Though the mood is subdued throughout nine of the 10 tracks the exception the quirky ‘March of the Owl and the Bat’ they do allow for the elegant crafting of interior detail within each compositional form. Here, the range and variation of Frisell's guitar is worth the price of the record alone he doesn't simply play the right thing at the right time, he says the right thing with the most apposite sound at the right time. Vu always seems to think compositionally, in both solo and accompaniment, and it is fair to say that he always has something profound to contribute in whatever musical situation he finds himself. Here, his approach is lyrical, something that seemed to emerge of inner necessity during his time in the Pat Metheny group and has been gradually refined since, but nevertheless he is light enough on his feet to interact with the occasional angular densities of his accompaniment. This could well be his best album yet.
