If there are some albums which outstay their welcome by shoehorning in a sub-par filler or two, equally there are those which leave you craving more. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sinatra at the Sands, the classic 1966 live album which captured Sinatra in the company of Count Basie and his orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones, this homage from Curtis Stigers and the Danish Radio Big Band (featuring a cover which replicates the layout of its famed precursor) is very much in the latter category. As the final chord of ‘One For My Baby’ dies away, after a playing time of just over 33 minutes, you're left wishing that band and singer had played on. With tempos perfectly judged throughout, from the über-slow treatment of ‘Don't Worry ’Bout Me’ to the palpable excitement of ‘My Kind of Town’, Stigers and the brilliant musicians of the DRBB conjure up ravishing palettes of sound while putting their own joyful stamp on this much loved repertoire. A live performance from the DR Koncerthusert in Copenhagen, the recording has enormous presence and bite.
