The British outfit that brought a vibrant, contemporary slant to Brazilian music throughout the 1990s return with an album that sees the nucleus – multiinstrumentalist- producer-composer Christian Franck and co-producers Patrick Forge and Toni Econimides – revitalised by a strong new set list and impressive cast of international collaborators, although our own Dennis Rollins, in full on Don Drummond mode on the gripping ‘Places We Go’, is among the most impressive. If the Jamaican dub flavour is strong on that piece then it is cleverly enhanced by liberal shots of Afrobeat. There is also a tangy Fela flavour created by the tough basslines of Jason Yarde's baritone sax on pieces such as the infectious ‘Um Amor A Mais’. Uptempo dance numbers have always been a Da Lata staple but they also uphold the sensual lyricism of the samba and bossa tradition elsewhere, proving that Franck has a desire to strike a balance between melodic and rhythmic content. Indeed, the strength of this offering is the writing and playing as well as the production. Economides is one of the best engineers in contemporary British music and the audio quality here is faultless. The pristine sound is complemented by songs of real substance.
