Tom Albach's Nimbus West label was the home for seminal early 1980s west coast jazz of a Coltranian persuasion, and after the recent reissue of works by its revered figurehead, Horace Tapscott, attention now turns to some of the lesser-known artists in the catalogue. There is very little biographical information on alto-saxophonist/flautist Komolafe, but this album, which is his only known recording, is a document of a substantial talent that has slipped under the radar of jazz history. Very much part of the post-A Love Supreme movement, Komolafe drew his own voice from the masters' modal vocabulary, which he personalised effectively with hard swung soloing. The original title-track is superb, as are covers of Wayne Shorter's ‘Speak No Evil’ and Thelonious Monk's ‘'Round Midnight’. Komolafe leads with aplomb, but his rhythm section has strong personalities who strike the right balance between sensitivity and aggression to imbue the music with an affecting emotional charge. Another one of Kamasi Washington's forebears comes to light, and for that all praises are due.
