This is a remarkable group – and recording. Dafnis Prieto is the revolutionary Cuban drummer, who has recently been awarded (to add to all his many others) the MacArthur Fellowship, known as the ‘genius award’. Jason Lindner is one of the most sought-after Israeli musicians on the new New York scene and Kokayi is a highly regarded black American singer-songwriter from Washington DC, who once worked with Steve Coleman. This whole album is totally improvised. Every one of the 12 tracks was completely composed in the studio, all the songs, the lyrics and the tracks. They may not all be to your taste, because Kokayi is more of a rock than jazz singer (hence the rating), but very good of his kind and very soulful. Apparently every night's performance is completely different, with new songs coming together spontaneously on stage. As Prieto says: “We have no preconceived idea of what we play or what you might hear. That is the excitement, the challenge, the elegance and the beauty.” This is Prieto's fifth album as a leader, with each one altogether different from their predecessors. If you can, check out his album About the Monks, by his Absolute Quintet (‘Taking the Soul For a Walk’) and, recently reviewed on these pages, the Si o Si Quartet. An outstanding talent.
