Dan Messore is a guitarist with, it seems, very little inclination to shred. Across these original instrumentals (arranged by band-mate Ballamy), he employs a soft, warm tone in the service of some highly melodic playing. Tracks like the opener, ‘First Light’, are built around thoughtful, extended heads that almost play right through as composed pieces, but for the insertion of gentle solos that retain the over-arching logic of melody and structure. There’s something genteel, serene and, at times, slightly wistful about Messore’s pieces: ‘Waitent Wantant’ is a pretty meditation like a splash of watercolours on a clean stave; and ‘Mr Lepard’ is a meandering solo-guitar piece that melds jazz and country stylings, not unlike Jerry Garcia’s ‘Love Scene Improvisations’ from the movie Zabriskie Point. Whatever the context – whether a lilting groove with a hint of bossa, as on the title track, or the boppish fun of ‘Ode to Gilly’ – it’s Messore’s lightness of touch that characterises this set.
