There are two important dedications in this CD's booklet. One is to Ron Saint Germain, a ‘sacré monstre’ in the world of engineering and mixing. The other is to David Lynch's Twin Peaks: The Return, a cultural phenomenon populated by other monsters, which Weiss, a drummer who is as versatile as he is skilful, credits as a major source of inspiration. If there is an appropriately familiar cloud of dread drifting across the music then, it nonetheless has the kind of developmental character that is sometimes denied works tightly tailored to fit small-screen narratives. Several of the pieces are long, dense arrangements in which Ben Monder's guitar is a bruising, crunching presence, though the coda of ‘Badalamenti’, with its finely meshed descending swirls of synthesiser and piano, is both dreamy and disturbing. Indeed, the overall heaviness of the music, kickstarted by Weiss' pounding but intricate snare work, betrays a distinct love of all variations of extreme metal music imaginable leavened with both harmonic ingenuity and artful distortion. It is very well done, with an edgy austerity all round, but there are times when the composing doesn't quite match the stature of such accomplished players, suggesting that better is to come if Weiss gets a second wind.
