The tuba player Daniel Herskedal won the attention of UK listeners with his well received 2012 duo recording Neck of the Woods alongside Norwegian compatriot and Django Bates-mentored tenor star Marius Neset. Neset's vigorous musicianship was a feature of that one whereas on the second recording under Herskedal's name, the music is understated and ghostly, delicately pulsating, at times quite beautifully mellow, at others to the point of being dispassionate. All are Herskedal's originals bar a remake of Modest Mussorgsky's ‘Bydlo’. He makes the tuba sound like a different instrument, exquisite, in hushed tones and his vocalised sounds, reminscent of Arve Henriksen's trumpet, evokes moonlit prairies more than Nordic fjords. The album title Slow Eastbound Train and the track names chime with Herskedal's atmospheric arrangements for tuba, piano, percussion and string chamber orchestra which adds balmy African grooves and Bollywood-ish sounds. The contribution of the pianist Eyolf Dale is notable also for providing the jazz interest. He's an animated soloist who brings a clarity to his folky-dance and classical music-informed improvisation.
