Led by saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi, this nonet's uninterrupted 47-minute live composition runs likes a tapestry of tonal rivulets, meandering and braiding in subtly shifting helixes of cello, violin, double-bass and perspicacious flute. Emanating from sumptuous low-end strata rises the leader's mournful siren cry and Mallory Soto's smoky, almost Patty Waters-like croon, while Noah Guevara's clustered and clean arpeggios lend the piece a sensitively struck post-rock pointillism. Suffused in mystery, full of eerie, beatific menace, Towards A Walk In The Sun teeters on a spectral game of brinksmanship, played out around the dining table of one of Leonora Carrington's fictional soirees, where a charming hostess threatens to morph into a man-eating she-wolf, but just about manages to keep herself in check.
