With his passing, it's hard not to hold Charlie Haden in mind when listening to this sublime collaboration. Haden and Hank Jones' albums Steal Away and Come Sunday visited hymns and spirituals with a simple devotion that was profoundly moving. Now Douglas and Caine tread a similar path, reviving and re-working psalms and devotional songs from New England. Caine and Douglas, like their forebears, are long-term friends and there's an easy intimacy in their playing which is gentle yet fearless. Present Joys, for all its simplicity, is testifying, transcendent music and it's no surprise that Douglas doffs his cap to ‘A Love Supreme’ in ‘Ham Fist’. It's tough to play so naked, so open hearted; there ain't no place to hide. But it helps to have such a sumptuous recording sound, as though we're sat alongside these two heroes. At times the pair bounce with a bluesy joy as they morph from the singing hymn theme that is the title track into a Parker-esque swing. But then they go dark and biblical, as on the epic ‘Bethel’, a song fit for Haden and other recently lost heroes to go over Jordan to.
