Could it be that Dave Liebman has finally found a record label he can call home? Certainly the creative freedom he enjoys with RareNoise is bearing fruit, as this live performance at John Zorn’s Stone club, now located in New York’s New School at 55 West 13th Street, demonstrates. Spontaneous creativity in jazz can often be a slippery prospect, simply because ideas and inspiration can be difficult to maintain over sustained periods of music making. Not so here. In conversation as he is in performance, Liebman is never short of things to say, and Drake and Rudolph are well respected practitioners of their craft, creating both the mood and sonic environment for the saxophonist and flautist to excel. Album highlights include the electronic backdrop and spiralling creativity of Liebman’s bamboo flute on ‘Becoming’ and the sheer simpatico of all three musicians as they build from the small, dark beginning on ‘Formless Form’ to Liebman’s jagged incisions that climax the piece.
