While the perspicacious Liebman travels the world lecturing, performing and giving master classes, he leaves countless CDs in his wake, but his best work is often to be found closer to home, with his own ensembles and musicians whom he has been associated with over the years. It is then his playing seems to shift into another gear – he is more relaxed, the burden of ‘American guest artist’ in other people's ensembles removed, he seems free to be, well, himself. In this album of duets, comprising eight originals by either Liebman or Markowitz and two standards – ‘The Night Has A Thousand Eyes’ and ‘'Round Midnight’ – Liebman's genuine mastery as a jazz performer (saxophonist sounds somehow limiting in Liebman's case) emerges in plainer view. Recorded live in 2004 at the Manhattan School of Music, where both saxophonist and pianist are familiar faces, two great American jazz improvisers are caught doing what they do best. Although he must have played ‘The Night Has A Thousand Eyes’ more times than he's had hot dinners, Liebman is as majestic here as he is inscrutable on his own composition ‘Jung’.
