Put the cat out, loosen the trousers, pour a long one, shut your eyes and when you come round in just over the hour you'll have been on a mighty journey. All three cuts here come in over 20 minutes long, each often reveling in a grueling intensity, yet each not without moments of space and a rough hewn lyric sheen. The opening and closing improvisations are the trio, all of whom are well known to each other in various formats, but as Smith and Torn double-up on electronics, there's an orchestral vision to each song which breaks the mold of what ‘trios’ sound like. Moreover, the middle cut, ‘Spartan, Before the Hit’ also recruits a take-no-prisoners Taborn, a choir of guitars and a string quartet. Initially more meditative than the other tracks – the whole album can be read as a triptych with ‘Spartan’ the structured centre of its two surrounding panels – it soon morphs to a labyrinthine weld of atmospherics before the core implodes about 11 minutes in. Yet somehow a new order is restored and we trail into an etherealness like an outtake from a never written Space Odyssey soundtrack. Epic, exhilarating and never to be repeated.
