How about this for a potentially over-crowded concept: an album jointly dedicated to 20th century classical composer, Olivier Messiaen, and hip hop record producer J Dilla, which draws compositionally on exotic bird calls, ancient Gagaku Japanese court music and various other pan- Asian sonorities all delivered by an electric fusion band dedicated to exploring non-Western microtonal tuning. It probably shouldn’t work, but David ‘Fuze’ Fiuczynski has been straining at the boundaries of the acceptable since fronting Screaming Headless Torsos in the 1980s and, against all odds, he carries it off nicely. The microtonal preoccupation gives the whole endeavour a woozy, somewhat dream-like feel – and there’s some astonishing musicianship at work, with bittersweet violin and Chinese oboe creating a charmingly wonky Orientalism, and Rudresh Mahanthappa’s alto sax approximating the snake- charmer slither of a Persian ney. Both cartoonish and seriously considered, it’s about as bonkers, and genuinely absorbing, as you could reasonably hope for.
