Posi-Tone's producer Marc Free (who, incidentally, was at college with the sons of probably Britain's best-ever jazz export, Victor Feldman) has been coming up with some interesting sessions lately. A couple that spring to mind are by tenorman Walt Weiskopf and a scorching three tenor “mad bebop scramble” (as the late Ronnie Scott would have described it), featuring Weiskopf, Joel Frahm and West Coaster Doug Webb as leader, backed by organist Brian Charette and prolific drummer Rudy Royston. Of particular interest is this most recent release by one of the most underrated and sensitive current trombonists, David Gibson, also a fine arranger and composer, who manages to get fresh sounds on ten tracks with a front line of just trombone and one of NYC's most impressive young trumpeters who sounds more inventive on every record he makes – Josh Evans. The rhythm section is interesting, too. The adventurous Theo Hill came to London a few months ago with Charles Tolliver's group, while Kush Abadey, from Wallace Roney's Quintet, is considered by many to be the very best of all the new young drummers. He is highly inventive on all tracks and gets solid support from bassist Claffy. Unfair to choose highlight tracks, but particularly pleasing are ‘Grassfed’, ‘Eyes of Argus’, ‘Persephone’ and… well all of them really! Tom McIntosh's ‘Cup Bearers’ apart, Gibson brought eight excellent new songs to the studio. A thoroughly enjoyable CD – and watch out for Evans.
