I was first aware of Kikoski playing in Roy Haynes's 1993 group, but the pianist and Kozlov got to know each other a few years later through working with the Mingus Big Band. Since then, the bassist has become an inventive and totally dependable sideman, and an impression that there's more to Kikoski than was sometimes apparent is amply borne out in this release. As well as four varied Kikoski originals, some of them previously recorded in different settings, the four other tracks include unexpected choices such as Chick Corea's ‘Quartet #1’ and a fugue by Keith Emerson. Several tracks have notable contributions by Kozlov, including an intro to ‘Satellite’, which here not only follows Coltrane's changes but incorporates the contrafact's foundation melody ‘How High The Moon’. But the piece de resistance is probably the title-track, where Bud Powell's already complex arrangement is translated into 7/4 and then improvised upon. A pleasant surprise from the mists of history, recorded way back in 2016 before the pandemic.
