David Lyttle began his career as a child performer with the Lyttle Family. Now (just) in his 30s, he has graduated to being a producer and label owner, as well as establishing himself as a jazz drummer of impressive chops. His previous release, Interlude (2012), featured hip-hop and neosoul influences, as well as guest appearances from the likes of Soweto Kinch. The multi-talented Northern Irish musician's new album is even more ambitious in its distillation of folk and urban, acoustic and electric, pop, rap and jazz sources. Three rappers and even more singers taking turns at the mic means huge variety in sound and tone but Lyttle achieves musical coherence all the same – an impressive achievement in the circumstances. Standout cuts include ‘Lullaby for the Lost’, which moves with assurance through A Tribe Called Quest territory and features a gorgeous solo from Joe Lovano, and ‘Seek’ and ‘Perception’, sung by the mainman's mother, Anne.
