Needless to say, the tenor saxophonist has recorded enough for box sets to be issued every other month, so it comes as no surprise that this is the second Black Saint/Soul Note anthology within two years. While the previous offering focused on Octets, this collection gathers together seven albums recorded with various trios and quartets, all of which have a very different character. Between Sweet Lovely, which finds the leader with two thirds of Air (Fred Hopkins and Steve McCall), and Windward Passages, where the accompanists are Dave Burrell and Monika Larsson, there are several other great ensembles, none more so than the Sanctuary Within band where Tony Overwater's bass is supplemented by the drumspercussion twin engine of Sunny Murray and Kahil El Zabar. This is one of the sessions in which the shorter and more overtly Africaninfluenced tunes are arguably more immediate than the progressive post-bop elsewhere, but there is a side to Murray's musical character that emerges amid the virtuosity of Morning Song that isn't talked about enough. He is a romantic. The spine tingling reading of ‘Body And Soul’ makes that abundantly clear.
