Championed in his heady youth by the likes of Ian Shaw and as likely now to be seen in the exalted company of a Gary Husband, Melody Gardot or Emma Rawicz, Purple/Black is, a little bizzarely, Preston’s first ‘solo’ album. But the wait makes this release even more special.
It all kicks off with the irresistible groove of ‘Winston’ driven by long-time pal Glasgow’s earworm bass figure. But even this mini splendour doesn’t forewarn you of the glories of ‘Cassino Dream’. Kicking off with a splendid 1980s electro vibe, it overflows into a gorgeous pay off between Downes’ lyrical piano flourishes and Preston’s joyous guitar flights. There’s nothing overplayed or raucous here: just a heartfelt clarity, a revelling in the straight-forward that pays dividends again and again. Rochford is very at home here, as a James Maddren would be, his meticulous, unfussy sense of time and detail giving all the scaffolding his band mates need.
Preston’s gift is to discover the right voice to fit the vibe of his composition. Yes, there are echoes of Frisell on the miniature ‘Ur Text’, or indeed the title track, but the point is the resonances jigsaw together the chordal textures and sense of storytelling that is deep in these different songs. Even on what could be a straight blues, ‘Blues for Klemens’, Preston teases us by suggesting the familiar then leading us into a sound world that is fresh yet unnerving.
The Volume One in the album’s title suggests there are more treasures to come. Here’s to Volume Two.
