As CVs go, it's not bad: on the blues side there's Paul Butterfield and Little Milton, from pop, rock and soul Bowie, Stevie Wonder and James Taylor while on the jazz side, the Breckers and Gil Evans enjoyed Sanborn's talents: not bad for a guy who just wanted to play like Hank Crawford. But despite that, and even with this being a 29-track double CD, Then Again is a curiously truncated ‘best of’. Focusing on the Warners solo albums, the first CD features Sanborn's commercial success. ‘Lisa’ and the funk of ‘Hideaway’ are obvious standouts but much sounds decidedly dated by now. Disk two highlights Sanborn's more eclectic material, the lyricism of ‘Lotus Blossom’, the Brecker-ish ‘Snakes’ and most intriguingly, Charlie Haden's dark ballad ‘First Song’ set against Bill Frisell's eerie chords. But jumped together in one bag like this, much of the material sits uneasily with itself. For fans indeed.
