The precociously talented Sancious is probably best known for his teen years in the early Springsteen bands; when he went solo, he took drummer Carter with him as the core of Tone, an altogether different musical creature. By the late 1970s they'd grasped a jazz-fusion-prog feel, influenced by producer Eddie Offord who'd twiddled the knobs for countless proggers like ELP. The most prog-tastic element on True Stories is Ligertwood's vox. He does a spanking Jon Anderson, notably on True Stories’ closing epic ‘Matter of Time’. Mahavishnu and especially Return to Forever also underwrite much of these two albums (Sancious having played on Stan Clarke's classic Schooldays). So you'll have a pretty good idea of what you're getting here. Bung in some classical vibes, like ‘Prelude 3’, and you have a heady if predictable mix. Just As I Thought is billed as a solo rather than Tone release, but follows a similar pattern, Sancious covering most instruments, but Berlin's bass is a bonus, as some might describe the absence of Ligertwood.
