If you want to know what David Torn, a film composer and guitarist who has worked with David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, Tim Berne, Don Cherry and Jan Garbarek, does when he's at home with the guitar, the answer, apparently is the sort of thing that appears on Only Sky. That he's decided to make such sounds available for public consumption is fortunate: these nine solo improvisations, subjected to real-time manipulations in a sort of Tornified Frippertronics, are absolutely riveting. He's big on atmosphere, and Only Sky is often expansive, unhurried, ambient; but Torn can also crumple sound in upon itself, his lines distorted not only by the employment of various fuzzboxes but also in that they bend melodies out of expected shape. There's a sense of endless possibilities in every moment, of advanced technique and, more importantly, judgment and discernment; it is music in which you can lose yourself utterly as it unspools towards the horizon.
