Any recording by the legendary New York ensemble is a cause for celebration but this one, nine years old, even more so, given that it marked the reboot of a band that greatly defined the culture clash in the Big Apple of the early 1980s: a kind of rabid punk distortion of the ‘jazz is the teacher, funk is the preacher’ edict. With two outstanding musicians in the rhythm section, guitarist Ronny Drayton and bassist Kim Clarke, the sound is as edgy and vital as ever, and the classic material, above all ‘Make Them Dance’, sounds anything but hackneyed. So, to the big question of whether leader-trombonist Joe Bowie and co still had their spark at the time of this performance the answer is a resounding yes, as both the explosive energy and attention to musical detail are writ large here. Furthermore, the engineering and mix are pristine, and one can only hope Bowie and his tireless groove merchants will be coming to a stage near you sooner rather than later.
