This is straightahead, swinging, unpretentious quartet jazz played by the trombone-wielding scion of the Marsalis clan with his father’s ever-thoughtful piano in support. Recorded in concert in Kalamazoo, Michigan (hence the title) there’s the buzz of a live gig, and a sense of everyone enjoying themselves playing through standards from ‘Autumn Leaves’ to ‘Tin Roof Blues’. Peterson’s drumming is highly inventive within the swing feel, and Veal’s bass is as impeccable as it was during his years of playing with Wynton. In this setting Delfeayo’s muted version of the ‘Sesame Street Theme’, with bass double stopping from Veal and some backbeat brushwork from Peterson, sounds entirely in keeping, as does the narrative flow of Marsalis’ original composition ‘The Secret Love Affair’. A couple of guest musicians join the band for ‘Blue Kalamazoo’ which was a spontaneous blues played on the night and Delfeayo’s winning introduction boosts his young associates’ confidence with great audience support. It’s not earth shattering music, but a memento of a fine concert played by musicians totally in sympathy with the older styles of jazz, yet able to inject a contemporary twist to keep the audience involved, whether in the hall on the night or listening to the album now.
