The concept behind this album is an interesting one, aiming to fuse the big band tradition with both the New Orleans brass band style and the city's very distinctive rhythm and blues legacy. Or as Delfeayo himself puts it: “big band swing feel, small group jazz spirit and brass band funkiness.”
The title track itself exemplifies this with some section playing behind Andrew Baham's vocal that ranks with the on form Basie band and then some propulsive small group-style drums from Herlin Riley. A slightly pedestrian ‘All on A Mardi Gras Day’ – despite the double drumming of Riley and Smitty Smith – doesn't quite match that. (Indeed it isn't as charismatic a recording of the song as Dr John and Freddie Kohlman's famous version with the Chris Barber band.) But vocalist Glen David Andrews comes into his own on a big band romp through the Meters’ ‘They All Ask'd For You', with some atmospheric trumpet from Scott Frock. Branford Marsalis guests on the album, most notably on the closing small group version of ‘Mardi Gras Mambo’ where his nimble soprano weaves deftly in and out of the fine drumming of Smith. So, all in all, across a selection of songs that all refer in some way or another to the Crescent City carnival season, the album succeeds well in bringing together those very elements that Delfaeyo set out to combine.
