Oh dear. This is the sort of set that presents a reviewer with a moral dilemma. Should he or she concentrate on the music – which is uniformly wonderful – or the ‘concept’ behind the reissue itself? Well, let's just say that all the albums heard here – which besides the two titular items also include 1955's Blows Hot and Cool… (originally on Dootone) and a further Blue Note, Dexter Calling – are classics of their kind, with Go! being Gordon's own personal favourite among his voluminous canon.
Discographically though, this double-disc issue is a train-wreck, leaping back and forth in chronology with the sort of randomness that does nobody any favours. Indeed, I'm not sure why Jazz Images didn't go the whole hog and do what Avid do, flagging up that this is actually four classic albums rather than the two strap-lined. Better to concentrate on the contents, which brims with Gordon at his best. In fact, so many of his greatest moments are here; ‘Cheescake’, ‘Love For Sale’, ‘Soy Califa’, ‘Don't Explain’, ‘Smile’ and ‘Cry Me A River’ all contain definitive Dexter statements, ranging from tough to tender and back again, which no lover (or player) of jazz tenor should ignore. Though this is a handy package for those new to Long Tall Dexter, I'd still say go for the Blue Note reissues on which you get those gorgeous sleeve designs where they belong – on the cover – and, above all, the sense that somehow, even posthumously, the artist might give a nod of approval.
