At last the debut by a band that was formed some three years ago and it's scarcely a disappointment. In Fogel, little known beyond musician circles, although he popped up on Empirical's last album, there's the emergence of a new piano star on the UK jazz scene with huge potential as it's clear both from this album and hearing him live that he has an original style all of his own. With all but Scott contributing tunes, Challenger showing his range (he's very different with the band Ma) and mature interpretative sensibility, Scott's unerring sense of time and interesting chopped-up beats keep you guessing on a very impressive debut. ‘T.N.G.’ might be partly named for Farmer's love of Star Trek but this band is definitely the next generation.
