We reviewed Vol 1 in Jazzwise 205 (March 2016) and noted then with approval the lively creativity of both the still very-active Fairweather and his late chum, the pianist Stan Barker. On this further showing, also released on Digby’s own label, it’s fun to observe the cornetist’s determination take each piece as a structure to be disassembled and rebuilt as inspiration dictates, with every kind of interjection and filigree improvement inserted, ideas tried out, quotes added and the cornet’s range of effects tested to the limit. Barker paces him well, his updated stride style akin to that of Sir Charles Thompson, and often solos with an Errol Garner flourish, at times effusive, at others maintaining a steady rhythmic hand as if to keep the improvisatory ship on an even keel. Listening to this second helping of what was clearly a satisfying encounter, I’m reminded of the sublime duo recordings made by another cornetist, Ruby Braff and the equally fine pianist Ellis Larkins. A host of good tunes thoroughly explored, filleted, primed for swing and cherished. Good ballad playing, too.
