Launching the NDR 60 Years Jazz archive project, this is the earliest surviving broadcast produced by the legendary Hans Gertberg, who went on to direct all those 1960s Jazz Workshops that documented the young Brit generation among many others. Here the contents seem initially underwhelming, with one of Dizzy’s lesser groups under the microscope of excellent studio sound. Without the extrovert vocals and percussion of Joe Carroll (as heard on the same tour’s Paris concert) the short-lived Legge sounds very modern for his day and Graham (one of very few to work with Gillespie, Basie and Ellington) makes the most of his brief exposure. Recorded the same day, Koller’s quintet reminds us that the germ of European originality lies in the Tristano school, with the briefly hyped Jutta Hipp emulating the master and Koller trying hard to sound like Warne Marsh. Mangelsdorff, even at this stage, doesn’t imitate anyone and his clipped articulation (often resembling a valve-trombone) is doubtless what facilitated his later adventures. Playing time is just 18½ minutes for Gillespie and 17½ for Koller.
